Postpartum Week 7

12/7/12

***New Goal***

Fitting back into my "skinny" black jeans..

I can't quite button them yet so here it is....

Can't wait to have a better looking picture! On a better note, I can fit into another pair of jeans I actually like....

And a cute pic of me in my new boots and scarf from Ruffled Feathers :)

I started Chalean Extreme today (every woman should do it). But whew, it's been a while. Felt good. A heavy weight program is the key to reducing body fat and building muscle to bring me back to pre-preggo body while being intentional on eating whole foods. This week I have kept my goal of no desserts :)

And I have to throw in some cute pics of my girls....

Workout tips, equipment, and motivation!

12/6/12

Working out...such a broad topic! What's your choice of fun (don't scowl at "fun")? That's what I want to address today. Fun. Is exercise fun for you? Has it EVER been fun for you? The majority of people who ask me exercise questions think I'm silly when I say that I enjoy working out. Why can't exercise be fun? I think it should be and needs to be for people to stick to it for the rest of their lives.

Has it always been fun for me? No. Believe it or not, I used to lay on the couch and eat potato chips everyday after school when I was in Jr. high. I did not want to do anything else for a while. Then I tried tennis at the end of 8th grade. I enjoyed it and my parents "ran with it" (ha they love to run) because they wanted me to get off my booty! Long story short, I started to enjoy exercise....but only after having to go to conditioning and playing tennis for at least a year...maybe 2. That freshmen year of conditioning was so HARD. Our coach was very tough on us and I had never worked my body that hard before. I did sports before. I did track in 7th grade and went to one, yes one, cross country practice in 8th grade (said forget this!). But for 4 consecutive years I exercised an average of 6 days a week. Resting in the off season didn't happen much. That was the time to practice and fine-tune my game.

Here I am with my best "tennis friend" Ellen. We won some tournament.

After senior year, when I finished tennis, something crazy happened to me. I couldn't sleep if I didn't exercise. It became so engrained with my normal activity that I laid in bed awake at night if I hadn't exercised that day. So began my journey of finding something I enjoyed outside of a sports team. Something I could do without a partner and not be tennis.

I feel like almost everyone defaults to running. It costs nothing except a good pair of running shoes (hopefully) and some music in your ear (if that). During the winter it's horrible if you don't have a treadmill. That's great if you love to run...I know plenty of people that do! But I just don't love it like that. Plus, I want to tone and work my whole body without having to run a few miles and then come back and do other things. I don't have time. Do you? Well here's what I'm into......

TURBO JAM. CHALEAN EXTREME. TURBO FIRE. INSANITY. REV ABS.

I INVESTED in some great weights. I can go from 5 lbs to 25 lbs and half sizes in between. Wonderful for saving space and it's cheaper than buying each set of weights individually.

BANDS. These are fantastic because they can replace weights in your workouts. They are also cheaper than weights. I have bands that are equivalent to 3 lbs up to 50 lbs. STEPPER. The step to the right is great for a host of things like increasing your cardio and using with weight lifting.

STABILITY BALL. What a wonderful invention. It's super inexpensive (can find for $6) and very effective. You can do push-ups off this, use it as a bench for chest exercises, do sit-ups, strengthen your back, use for balance, and incorporate with your cardio workouts. That's a long list. YOGA BANDS. Tie these together and you've got an intense lower body workout plus they're great for physical therapy if you are working through an injury or just had a surgery with your knees.

With the DVD's I listed you could do a different workout every day for over a year. How's that for changing things up? The equipment is very minimal (I have other things and these are my favorite but you don't even need half the stuff I've pictured). INVEST yourself and money into finding what you like. I found out that I enjoy kickboxing, plyometrics (using your own bodyweight), and weight lifting the best. I also enjoy biking but it's not all year with the weather.

What about space to workout? I may have a nice workout room in my house but I have never had one before a year ago. I used the living room, office, guest bedroom...you only need a few feet of space!

Money. What about money? Some may be reading this and saying, "Well I just don't have any money to spend on exercise stuff." Sorry to bust your bubble but at some point you're going to have to stop saying that and invest. Now I know everyone has rough patches and I COMPLETELY get that. But you have to realize that investing a few dollars into your health will SAVE YOU a ton of money. Don't take your family out to eat one time and you've bought several workouts that you can KEEP. Medical expenses are outrageous. Just to go see the doctor or buy a medication, it's way more money than a few exercise DVD's. Christmas is less than a month away. Ask for some workout gear! If you can't buy anything right now then look up workouts online. You know how many pins there are with great workout tips and ideas? Ever heard of Utube? Tons of workouts you can search for and it's free.

Just don't get in the trap of never wanting to spend money on tools that you can use the rest of your life. If you do then next thing you know you're 30 pounds overweight, you didn't find any fun exercises (now it's 10 times harder to start exercising), your back hurts, knees hurt, you have a terrible time sleeping, yet you have no energy, you've got acid reflux, and you're going to the doctor for check-ups only to get bad news that you're borderline diabetic and your cholesterol is too high.....or you could try out new things NOW to find something you enjoy. You may have to go through a season of hating it and pushing through. But it'll seem so easy and inexpensive when it comes to trying to workout in 10 years because your doctor gives you an ultimatum and you've been buying all those new clothes to fit into your larger shape plus added tests/medications for the problems that developed.

Sooo....off the soapbox now. Seriously, exercise can be fun. Ask around for workout classes. Find out if you like working out by yourself, with a friend, or with a group. Try a variety of classes. Don't just default to cardio. There are so many options and so many ways to do it without spending a bunch of money. I encourage you to find what works for you!

Accountability

12/3/12

So today my sis Rebecca and I were talking about trying to stay on track with our goals. We both have strengths and weaknesses in different areas. We decided to keep each other accountable this week for our goals. I like it because accountability really makes a difference with me. If I know I have to report to someone then I will do much better.

My goal this week is to have no desserts till at least Friday....which will be difficult again. I had kicked the sugar out and then Thanksgiving happened....with leftovers. So here I am craving cookies and cake. Oh well, what's the fun in not having a challenge?!

So do you have an accountability partner? How do you stay on track with eating and exercise?

Postpartum- 6 Weeks

12/2/12

Hannah is already 6 weeks. I did not do an update last week...I was busy and then I've decided to do posts every 2 weeks. Movement is slow now so I think 2 weeks will be better.

Yesterday I felt discouraged after trying on outfits for my hubby's company party. I don't look the same in them yet. I expressed my discouragement when my sister Rebecca said, "You had Hannah 6 weeks ago! You look great." Anddd she was right.

Where did that discouragement come from? Some fear in me that I don't good if I'm not in my smallest jeans yet? Maybe I place security in being fit and thin sometimes. I struggle. Satan plants seeds of lies that I'm not good enough. He does it with all of us, huh? I'm catching on more (with some things). That's why I just surrender it to God. He should be my ultimate focus. If I'm doing things right then I just don't need to not worry.

Here's my stats...

Weight: 136 (been fluctuating between 135-137)

Arm: same
Chest: same
Waist: 34
Hips: 35 3/4
Leg: 20
Calf: same

Front pic...I took this myself and I'm twisting...not the best.

BUT.....I fit in my first pair of goal jeans!! New goal coming soon!

Look at the progression. This was week 1 (37 1/2 inches)...

Week 2 (35 1/4 inches)...

Week 3 (34 1/4 inches)...

Week 4 (34 1/4 inches)...

Week 6 (this week. 34 inches)...

What a difference! My body is taking shape more and that's important. I'm getting stronger in my back/core. I have been exercising at least 4 days a week. I'm going to start my heavy weight program this next week. I plan to do a post on workout ideas for moms....if you have questions you want me to answer then ask now so I can write about it on here. FB message me or comment below!

Broccoli Salad Recipe

11/30/12

The other week I had this broccoli salad at my parent's new church...it was YUMMY. I didn't get the recipe but took note of some of the ingredients in the salad before I devoured 2 helpings...hehe. I looked online for recipes and decided to use ingredients I had and tweak a few recipes with my own twist. I made this salad last night and it was good (along with homemade meatloaf, skillet green beans and cornbread muffins. yum)....my brother and sister in law had dinner with us and Rebecca loved it (my hubby and Erik won't touch it of course). So I told her I would post this :)

This is my OWN version and I am not always good at measuring things..I eyeball. So don't freak out when I say "handfuls" in the recipe....it's my best guess of what I did. If you feel something is too much/little then adjust for you :)
Aren't these pics just pretty? I have truly been enjoying the beauty of fruits and veggies God created for us!

1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup mayonnaise
3 tbsp white vinegar
3 tbsp sugar
1/4 lemon zest
1/2 of the juice of a lemon

7. Pour wet mix over broccoli mix and stir together. Let sit in fridge for a couple hours before serving.

Postpartum- Week 4

11/17/12

This weeks stats are the same. Weight and measurements are the same. I've hit a plateau. What do you do when you hit one? Well, I'm not discouraged, I knew it'd come sooner or later. What's my plan now? I'm not going to cut calories to lose more weight. Continually fine tuning the quality of foods I'm consuming is still a top priority. What I am going to do is focus on my weight training.

Weight training? Not cardio? Some of you may be asking these questions. Why weight training? Adding muscle and reducing my body fat is my #1 goal. If I cut my calories then my metabolism will slow down. If I increase my activity and I'm cutting calories then my deficit will be too big and I don't want that. What I want to do is increase the speed of my metabolism through weight training. I can readjust calorie intake once I start decreasing fat and increasing muscle.

Muscle is the key after having a baby. When we (women) get pregnant, our bodies fat percentage increases naturally to help take care of the baby. So I need to take those extra pounds of fat off my body now that I'm not pregnant. If you don't actively lift weights to increase muscle mass after having a baby then you're setting yourself up for a big problem. Each child you have will increase your body fat percentage. Which will in turn slow your metabolism down....making it HARDER to lose weight. Sound familiar? It is possible to reverse the cycle by lifting heavy weights (not 5 pounders).

My Body Fat percentage is currently 25%. My goal is to get back to 19-20% like I was. The healthy range of body fat is between 19-32% for women.

I've still got 10 pounds to go and the "fun" has just begun. Ha. I am ready to take on this challenge. I know it'll take time and consistency. Losing the last few pounds takes time.....
